Wilson fermions and axion electrodynamics in optical lattices.

چکیده
We show that ultracold Fermi gases in optical superlattices can be used as quantum simulators of relativistic lattice fermions in 3+1 dimensions. By exploiting laser-assisted tunneling, we find an analogue of the so-called naive Dirac fermions, and thus provide a realization of the fermion doubling problem. Moreover, we show how to implement Wilson fermions, and discuss how their mass can be inverted by tuning the laser intensities. In this regime, our atomic gas corresponds to a phase of matter where Maxwell electrodynamics is replaced by axion electrodynamics: a 3D topological insulator.

Quantum simulation of gauge potentials with cold atoms in optical lattices: a tunable platform for relativistic fermions and axions
We offer here a brief introduction to the idea of quantum simulations with cold atomic gases, with focus on the recent efforts towards artificial gauge potentials and fields. This is mainly intended as a sort of “pedestrian guide” for people not yet working in the field, but curious to get a first contact with it; longer and deeper reviews are addressed for deeper details. As a special case, we...
متن کاملWave propagation in axion electrodynamics
In this paper, the axion contribution to the electromagnetic wave propagation is studied. First we show how the axion electrodynamics model can be embedded into a premetric formalism of Maxwell electrodynamics. In this formalism, the axion field is not an arbitrary added Chern-Simon term of the Lagrangian, but emerges in a natural way as an irreducible part of a general constitutive tensor. We ...
متن کاملNon-Abelian optical lattices: anomalous quantum Hall effect and Dirac fermions.
We study the properties of an ultracold Fermi gas loaded in an optical square lattice and subjected to an external and classical non-Abelian gauge field. We show that this system can be exploited as an optical analogue of relativistic quantum electrodynamics, offering a remarkable route to access the exotic properties of massless Dirac fermions with cold atoms experiments. In particular, we sho...
متن کاملStudy of Cullum's and Willoughby's Lanczos Method for Wilson Fermions ?
The Lanczos method of Cullum and Willoughby is studied for euclidean Wilson fermions in quenched and unquenched SU(2) gauge elds on lattices of volume ranging from 4 4 to 16 4. The method is reliable even on larger lattices, but its cost for the computation of a given fraction of the spectrum grows (approximately) with the square of the lattice volume. We investigate the convergence behaviour a...
متن کاملOptical gyrotropy from axion electrodynamics in momentum space.
Several emergent phenomena and phases in solids arise from configurations of the electronic Berry phase in momentum space that are similar to gauge field configurations in real space such as magnetic monopoles. We show that the momentum-space analogue of the "axion electrodynamics" term E·B plays a fundamental role in a unified theory of Berry-phase contributions to optical gyrotropy in time-re...
